Christmas Gifts for a Long-Distance Best Friend

Hands lifting a framed Capy and Bara print out of a gift box. The print reads "Life weighs less when you share it."

When your best friend lives in another city, a Christmas gift has two jobs: it has to survive the trip, and it has to make the distance feel a little smaller once it arrives. The ideas below are sorted by how they do the second job. Some are things to keep, some are things you do together while apart, and one is the best gift a friendship that runs on phone calls can get: a date to see each other. The 2026 mailing dates and a few lines for the card are at the end.

Gifts that say "us"

These stay on a shelf or a wall and bring you to mind every time your friend walks past.

  • A print of the two of you, without a photo. Most friendships have someone calm who carries everybody and someone restless who wants to fix everything. That is Capy and Bara exactly: Capy carries, Bara fixes. Our print of Capy carrying Bara, with Pincho the cactus riding along, reads "Life weighs less when you share it." Add both your names and pick the color. We mail it free to any address in the 50 states, so it can go straight to your friend's door. See the prints.
  • A photo book of your years. Not the best photos, the true ones: the blurry concert, the haircut neither of you mentions, the waiting room you sat in together. Under each one, write a caption only the two of you will understand.
  • A recipe in your handwriting. The dish you always make when you're together, written out on a card. It costs almost nothing, and it will be kept longer than anything you could buy.
  • A taste of your town. Coffee from the café where you used to sit for hours, the hot sauce from the corner store, cookies from the bakery that still gets your order right. A small box of home lands hardest when your friend is the one who moved away.
  • Two ornaments that match. One for your tree and one for theirs. Every December, each of you hangs half of the same pair.

Gifts you use together while apart

A long-distance friendship lives on small rituals more than on big moments. Each of these gives you one.

  • "Open when" letters. A bundle of short sealed letters: open on Christmas morning, open when you miss me, open before our next call, open on a bad day in January. The January one is the letter they will thank you for.
  • A calendar with the calls already in it. Circle one date in every month of the new year and write it in yourself, so the next call is never a maybe. In Bara's story, Bara tries to fix a goodbye with a calendar. The calendar does not fix the goodbye, but it gives the waiting a shape.
  • The same book, twice. Mail one copy, keep the other, and read a chapter a week. When you finish one, send a voice note instead of a text. Hearing each other is the whole point.
  • A movie night across two living rooms. Pick a holiday movie, mail the snacks you would have shared, and press play on a call at the same moment.

The best gift: a date on the calendar

If you can manage it, the present that matters most to a friend far away is the next time you'll be in the same room. It doesn't have to be a trip you've already booked. Before you wrap anything, agree on a weekend in the new year, then make the gift a "ticket" for it: the date, the place, and the first thing you'll do when you see each other. A plan with a date is a promise. A plan without one is a nice idea.

When to mail it

For delivery before December 25, the USPS recommends these 2026 dates:

  • Within the lower 48 states: USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail by December 17, Priority Mail by December 18, Priority Mail Express by December 19.
  • To Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico: USPS Ground Advantage by December 16, First-Class Mail by December 17, Priority Mail by December 18, Priority Mail Express by December 19.

Those are recommendations, not guarantees. Anything made to order, like a print, a photo book or an engraved ornament, also needs a few days to be made before it ships. If the gift has your names on it, order it in the first days of December, not the last ones.

One more rule worth knowing before you pack a box of home: alcohol can't go through the mail. If the tradition you share comes in a bottle, send the recipe and a promise to make it together next time.

What to write in the card

The card is the part your friend will read more than once. A few lines to borrow:

Different cities, same inside jokes. Merry Christmas to my favorite person to call.

We don't talk every day, and we never had to. A friendship like a cactus doesn't need watering every day.

Counting the days until we're in the same kitchen again.

You're still the first person I want to tell everything. Distance just makes the calls longer.

If you'll see each other before Christmas

Sometimes the visit sneaks up on you: a layover, a weekend home, a last-minute drive. If the two of you will be in the same town, the same print can be ready the day you order it with Same Day Pickup, and you get to hand it over in person, which beats any shipping label.

Whatever you choose, send it with the next call already planned. That is the part of the gift that actually closes the distance.
