Capybaras

Capybara Christmas Gifts for a Friend Who Loves Them

Hands lifting a framed Capy and Bara print out of a gift box. On a yellow background, Bara eats an ice cream cone on Capy's back, under the words "You are my favorite mess."

The best capybara Christmas gifts for a grown-up friend are the ones that borrow something from real capybaras: a zoo adoption in their name, a hot citrus bath like the one Japan's capybaras get every winter, or a day out to watch them in person. A plush and a pair of socks still count, and the list below has those too, with a quick guide to picking a plush that actually looks like a capybara. Card lines are at the end.

Adopt a capybara in their name

Plenty of zoos run symbolic adoptions: you pay, the money goes to animal care, and your friend gets a certificate with their name on it. Nobody takes a capybara home. They get something better: one of their own, somewhere, eating grass on their behalf.

  • Palm Beach Zoo, Florida: the capybara is one of the animals on its adoption list. The basic package is digital (a certificate, a photo and a fact sheet), and the bigger ones add printed pieces, a plush, or zoo tickets.
  • San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance: it offers a virtual capybara adoption sent by email, with nothing in the mail, and a package with a small plush and an adoption card.

The digital version is the perfect late gift. It works for a friend in another state, it can't get lost in the holiday mail, and printed on good paper it looks lovely tucked into a card.

A citrus bath, the way capybaras take it

Every winter, the capybaras at the Izu Shaboten Zoo in Japan get their own outdoor hot bath. This season runs from November 21, 2026, to April 4, 2027, and their yuzu bath, a hot bath with citrus fruit floating in it around the winter solstice, turns 30: it began in 1996.

Give your friend the human version. A small box with bath salts, a candle, a soft washcloth and a handful of mandarins or oranges to float in the water (yuzu is hard to find in most US stores). Add a note: "Instructions: be a capybara about it. Nothing is urgent." It's the gift for the friend who never stops and always says they're fine.

A day to see them in person

For some friends, nothing beats the real thing. If there's a zoo near you with capybaras, the gift is the day: the tickets, lunch, and a promise to stand by their enclosure as long as your friend wants. Bring patience. An adult capybara eats 6 to 8 pounds of grass a day, says the San Diego Zoo, so you'll mostly find them eating, floating or asleep. That is the show.

If the zoo is far, wrap a handmade voucher with a date already on it. A plan with a date is a promise. A plan without one is a nice idea.

A plush that looks like a capybara

Capybara plush toys are everywhere now, and a lot of them look more like a bear or a guinea pig. Before you buy, check for these:

  • A barrel of a body on short legs.
  • A square face with a blunt, flat snout, not a pointy one.
  • Eyes, ears and nose set high on the head. Real capybaras have all three near the top, so they can float with almost everything underwater (the San Diego Zoo explains it).
  • A face that says "all is well." If the plush looks worried, it isn't a capybara.

For a grown-up, a small one for the desk at work usually gets more love than a giant one for the bed. Or give both and let them decide.

Stocking stuffers and gift exchange picks

If you drew a capybara fan in the office gift exchange, these small things land well and fit almost any limit:

  • Capybara socks, for the friend whose feet are always cold.
  • A mug for the morning coffee, or the evening tea.
  • Stickers for a laptop or water bottle.
  • A capybara ornament. Every December, when it goes on the tree, they'll think of you.
  • A notebook with a capybara on the cover, for the lists they never finish.

A print of two capybaras that are the two of you

We make Capy and Bara, two capybara best friends. They aren't real capybaras, they're characters, but any capybara lover will see themselves in them. Capy is big and calm and carries everybody; Bara never stops moving and wants to fix everything. In the print in the photo, Bara eats an ice cream cone on Capy's back under the words "You are my favorite mess." Add one name or both, pick the color, and either collect it with Same Day Pickup at a store near you or have it mailed free to any address in the 50 states. See the prints.

Not sure which one your friend is? There's a quiz for that: are you a Capy or a Bara?

The gift to skip: a real capybara

A live capybara is not a Christmas present. The San Diego Zoo notes they need a swimming hole to stay healthy and live in groups of about 10 in the wild. That doesn't fit in an apartment or a backyard, and in many places keeping one is restricted or not allowed at all. Love them from a respectful distance, and adopt one at a zoo instead.

Lines for the card

All original. Borrow the one that sounds like your friend:

You're my favorite capybara: calm on the outside, a lovely mess on the inside.

Merry Christmas to the one person I'd happily float next to all day doing nothing.

This Christmas, be a capybara: eat well, sit in warm water, answer no emails.

Capybaras live in groups. You're my group.

A capybara can stay underwater for five minutes. I can't go five minutes without telling you something.

That last one is true, by the way. The San Diego Zoo says so.
