Gift for a Friend Who Is Like a Sister

Hands lifting a framed print out of a gift box. On a green background, Bara climbs onto Capy's back under the words "Same roots. Different kind of magic."

The best gift for a friend who's like a sister isn't the kind you give any friend: it's one that says she's already family. A standing place in your traditions, a key to your house, your mom's recipe, her name next to yours. A necklace or a candle is fine, but what will make her cry is seeing that her place in your life is official. Below are both kinds of ideas, the ones that make her family and the ones that are just very sister, and at the end, what to put in the card.

Gifts that make her family

These are the gifts an ordinary friend doesn't get. That's why they mean so much.

  • A copy of your house key on a nice keychain, with a note: "So you never have to knock." Few things say "you belong here" like a key.
  • Her own stocking hung with your family's, her name stitched on it. Even if she spends Christmas Eve somewhere else, it's there.
  • Your mom's or grandmother's recipe, written in their handwriting if you can get it. If she grew up eating at your house, that dish is hers too.
  • A framed photo of her with your family. Your dad's birthday, your cousin's wedding, last year's Thanksgiving. Let her see she's in the family album, because she is.
  • A standing invitation. Write it on a card: "You have a seat at my table for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year's. Every year. No need to RSVP."

Sister-style gifts

Sisters share clothes, secrets and fights over the last cookie. These go there:

  • The sweater she always steals, except now she gets her own. No more excuses.
  • Matching jewelry that isn't identical: each of you wears the other's initial, or the other's birthstone.
  • A photo album of the two of you, from the first picture together to the latest, with blank pages at the back for what's coming.
  • A box of "us" things: the concert ticket, the napkin from the restaurant where you laughed until you cried, a photo of the place you lived when you met.
  • Something for both your homes: two matching mugs, one for her kitchen and one for yours, for the coffee during long phone calls.

Traditions to start

Sisters have traditions. If the two of you don't have one yet, this is the year to start:

  • A sister trip once a year, even if it's a weekend an hour from home.
  • A standing breakfast, the first Saturday of every month, same place.
  • A spa night at home, with face masks, nails and a movie you both know by heart.

Write it on a card with the date of the first one. A plan without a date isn't a tradition.

Before you give it: careful with the word "sister"

If your friend has sisters she doesn't get along with, or has lost a sister, "you're like a sister to me" can sting instead of warm. In that case, change the word: "you're my family," "you're my person." What you mean is the same.

A print of two who are family

We make prints of Capy and Bara, two capybara best friends: Capy is big and calm and carries everybody; Bara never sits still and always comes back. In the print in the photo, Bara climbs onto Capy's back under the words "Same roots. Different kind of magic." Add one name or both, pick the color, and collect it with Same Day Pickup at a store near you, or have it mailed free to any address in the 50 states. See the prints.

For the card

We weren't born sisters. We chose each other, and that doesn't come undone.

My mom likes you more than me. I don't blame her.

You have a seat at my table and a key to my door. That's what family is.

Thank you for being the sister I got to choose.

If you'd like something with both your names on it, here are personalized gifts for best friends with names.
