Capybaras

Capybara Gifts for Adults

Hands lifting a framed print out of a gift box. On a raspberry background, Capy walks along under the words "Wherever you are, slowly but surely, I'm on my way."

The best capybara gift for an adult isn't the twelfth plush. It's something that gives them a little of what they love about capybaras: seeing one up close, an afternoon of real calm, or a well-made thing they can keep at work without looking like it came from a kids' aisle. Below are ideas for any time of year, sorted by what kind of capybara fan your friend is, and at the end, the one gift to never give.

For the friend who wants to see one

If you live in Florida, there's one close by. Gatorland in Orlando runs a Capybara Encounter at Flamingo Island, where its capybaras swim and lie on the beach alongside flamingos and turtles. Here's how it works today, according to the park's page:

  • You sign up in the morning when you arrive, at the petting zoo. No reservation is needed, but it's popular, so get there early.
  • Encounters run in the afternoon, in small groups.
  • There are no encounters on Wednesdays. None at all.
  • Kids under 12 must come with a paying adult.

Check the page before you go, since days and times can change. The gift is the whole day: the tickets, the encounter, and lunch afterward, when they tell you everything they saw.

If there's no zoo nearby, a symbolic adoption works too. We explain how they work in our capybara Christmas gifts, and they make just as good a birthday present.

For the friend who needs to slow down

Some people love capybaras because capybaras are everything they can't be: unhurried, unbothered, soaking in water without guilt. Give that friend an afternoon like that.

  • A capybara bath: bath salts, a candle and a few mandarins to float in the water, like the capybaras in Japan in their winter hot spring bath.
  • An afternoon off: a handmade voucher that says "one afternoon with no plans. I'll handle everything else." Then actually do it.
  • A soft throw blanket for the couch, the kind that makes getting up feel optional.

If you want to know why they look so at peace, here's why capybaras are so calm.

For the desk at work

For the friend who spends the day in an office chair and needs something to smile at between meetings:

  • A small figurine for the monitor. Really small, so it doesn't get in the way.
  • A mug with a well-drawn capybara, not a cartoon with giant eyes.
  • A capybara-shaped planter with a succulent in it, which survives even when they forget to water it.
  • Sticky notes or a notebook with capybaras, for the lists that never end.

For the friend who'd wear one, quietly

An adult wants their capybara, but not on a giant T-shirt to the office. Subtle works better:

  • An enamel pin for a bag or a denim jacket.
  • Capybara socks, which only show when the shoes come off.
  • A small pendant or earrings, for someone who wears jewelry every day.

A print of a capybara on her way to you

We make prints of Capy and Bara. They aren't real capybaras, they're characters: Capy is big and calm, and Bara never sits still. In the print in the photo, Capy walks slowly under the words "Wherever you are, slowly but surely, I'm on my way." Add a name, pick the color, and collect it with Same Day Pickup at a store near you, or have it mailed free to any address in the 50 states. See the prints.

What to skip

A real capybara. Not for a birthday, not as a surprise, not "because she always wanted one." The San Diego Zoo explains they need a swimming hole to stay healthy and live in groups of about 10 in the wild. One alone, in an apartment or a backyard, isn't a good life. And in many places keeping one is restricted or not allowed at all. Love them from a respectful distance, and take your friend to see them.

Anything that reads as a kids' toy. If your friend is 35, a giant plush backpack will probably live in the closet. If they really do want a plush, here's how to pick one that actually looks like a capybara.

For the card

This is so you can have a capybara day: nothing urgent, everything slow.

You're the calmest person I know, except when you see a capybara.

Capybaras never go anywhere alone. Neither do you, as long as I'm around.

And if you want to know whether your friend is more of a Capy or a Bara, there's a quiz for that.
