Christmas Gifts for Your Best Friend

The best Christmas gift for your best friend is one only you could give: something that comes out of your friendship, not out of a "top sellers" list. To find it, ask yourself three questions before you shop, then find your friend's type in the ideas below. At the end there's a gift almost nobody thinks of (a date on the calendar) and a few lines for the card.
Three questions before you buy anything
Open your text thread with your best friend and scroll. The answers are almost always in there.
- What does she complain about? "My feet are freezing." "I don't have time to breathe." "My charger broke again." October's complaint is December's gift.
- What does she never buy for herself? The good face cream, the perfume she sniffs in the store and puts back, the book she's been meaning to read since spring.
- What do you two always do together? Saturday coffee, the show you watch at the same time in two different houses, the holiday lights drive every December. The gift can be more of that.
One good answer gives you a gift. All three give you a gift that makes her cry a little.
Ideas by the kind of friend she is
The one who carries everybody. She looks after the kids, her mom, her boss and you. Don't give her one more thing to do: give her rest. A voucher for an afternoon of babysitting, a massage, or a day where you handle everything and she just shows up.
The one who never stops. She always has a plan, a project and three things to fix. A good notebook with a good pen, a planner for the new year with the whole group's birthdays already written in, or a big insulated mug for the coffee she always forgets to drink while it's hot.
The one who's always cold. Thick socks, a soft throw blanket and a thermos that actually keeps things hot.
The cook. An apron with her name on it, her grandmother's recipes typed up and bound, or everything for your family's holiday dish with the recipe written in your own hand.
The homebody. A night in, already planned: pajamas, a movie, popcorn and her favorite snacks. The invitation is part of the gift: "Friday, your place, I'm bringing everything."
The one who has everything. She doesn't need anything you can buy. She needs something you make: a long letter, an album of this year's photos, a box of things only the two of you understand.
The one who lives far away. There's a whole guide for her: Christmas gifts for a long-distance best friend, with this year's mailing dates.
The capybara fanatic. There's a guide for her too: capybara Christmas gifts, including symbolic adoptions at real zoos.
Gifts that say "us"
These work for almost any best friend, because the gift is the friendship.
- A jar of 52 notes. One for every week of the new year: a memory, an inside joke, something you admire about her. It takes one evening to make and lasts all year.
- The album of the year. Not the best photos, the true ones: the blurry concert, the one from the urgent care waiting room, the birthday when the power went out.
- An ornament with the year on it. Give one every Christmas and in ten years she'll have a whole tree of the two of you.
- The recipe in your handwriting. The dish you always make together, written out on a card. It costs almost nothing and she'll keep it longer than anything you could buy.
A gift from Capy and Bara
We make Capy and Bara, two capybara best friends. Capy is big and calm and carries everybody; Bara is restless and wants to fix everything. Most friendships have a Capy and a Bara. The print in the photo is Capy on her own, on a pink background, with the words "Thank you for every time you listened.", for the friend who always picks up the phone. There are more prints, of the two of them together and of each one on her own. Add one name or both, pick the color, and collect it with Same Day Pickup at a store near you, or have it mailed free to any address in the 50 states. See the prints.
Not sure which one she is? There's a quiz: are you a Capy or a Bara?
The gift almost nobody gives: a date
Best friends always say "we have to see each other more." This year, give her the "more." Pick a date in the new year, a plan and a place, and write it on a card like a ticket: "Saturday, March 13. Breakfast, then the beach. I'm driving." A plan with a date is a promise. A plan without one is a nice idea.
If you're a group
If your best friend is part of a bigger group that's doing an exchange, here are gift exchange ideas for friends, with games for big groups and small ones.
Lines for the card
Thank you for picking up at any hour. Merry Christmas to my favorite person.
We've known each other so long I can't tell which memories are mine and which are yours.
This year was long. You made it shorter.
A friendship like a cactus: it doesn't need watering every day.
