Last Minute Gift for Your Best Friend

You forgot, or it snuck up on you. It happens. The good news: with your best friend, a last minute gift doesn't have to look last minute. It just has to be about the two of you, not expensive or complicated. Below are ideas sorted by how much time you have: something for right now, something you can make tonight, and something if you won't see her in person. At the end, how to write the card so nobody notices the rush.
For right now
You have to walk out the door. You can get all of these today:
- Her favorite food. The pastry from the bakery she loves, her usual coffee order, her favorite snack. Bringing it says "I remember what you like."
- A plant. Most grocery stores have them. A succulent or a cactus survives even a friend who isn't a plant person.
- Flowers, with a note. Flowers alone look last minute. With a handwritten note, they don't.
- A little pampering. A good hand cream, bath salts, a candle, all in one small bag.
- A print with her name on it. More on how to have that ready today, below.
For tonight, with what's in your house
If you have an evening and a pen, these take one night and mean more than most store-bought gifts:
- A coupon book. Paper, scissors and a stapler. "Good for one coffee, your pick", "good for one afternoon of babysitting", "good for listening without giving advice". Five well-chosen coupons make a real gift.
- A long letter. The things you've never told her. It doesn't have to be perfect; it has to be true.
- A memory box. A printed photo, a ticket stub from something you saw together, the napkin from that night. Whatever you find in your drawers.
- A playlist. Your songs, with a note on why each one is there.
If you won't see her today
If she lives far away, or your schedules don't line up:
- Send food. Order her favorite dish to her door with a note in the order.
- A long voice note. Not a ten-second "happy birthday": five minutes telling her a memory. It's the gift she'll play more than once.
- A plan with a date. "Saturday the 7th, breakfast is on me." Write it, send it, and keep it.
- A video of the two of you. This year's photos set to a song. Any phone can make one in minutes.
If she really does live far away, there are ideas for Christmas gifts for a long-distance best friend for next time.
A print that's ready today
We make prints of Capy and Bara, two capybara best friends. Capy is calm and always waits; Bara never sits still and always shows up, even if she has to run. In the print in the photo, Bara arrives with three balloons under the words "Happy birthday to my favorite person." Add one name or both, pick the color, and collect it with Same Day Pickup at a store near you: ready today. If there's no rush, we also mail it free to any address in the 50 states. See the prints.
Don't let the card say "last minute"
What gives away the rush isn't the gift: it's a card that says "happy birthday" and nothing else. Write something about the two of you and nobody will think about the clock:
I picked this thinking of you. Thinking of you wasn't last minute; I've been doing it for years.
Today I'm celebrating that you exist, and that you chose me as a friend.
The gift is small. How much I love you isn't.
If you need more, here's what to write on a gift tag for a friend.
