Ale the Octopus

Ale can turn any color she likes, so that is what everybody asks her for. What they do not ask her for is the rest: eight arms that each think for themselves, and a head that works out what nobody else has stopped to work out.

Where Ale lives

The open sea — no land at all, just water and reef.

Loves

Puzzles. Hiding. Squeezing through gaps that look too small.

Working on

Saying the thing she worked out, instead of waiting to be asked.

Says a lot

“Wait. Let me think.”

Ale’s story carries the value of not going by appearances, because the best thing about somebody is hardly ever the first thing you see. Something that matters for a child everybody praises for one small thing, and every child who never looks past it.

  • Wait. Let me think.

  • Look! The color of your bow.

  • Turning the color of the floor doesn’t find anybody.

  • If everybody shouts, he hides deeper.

  • I would hide too.
